A weekly NYC guide featuring things to do in New York City this week, including outdoor movie nights, Smorgasburg, free yoga, stargazing, summer festivals, live performances, and seasonal events across the city.

Summer weather in New York can be unpredictable, and changing conditions—including reduced air quality from Canadian wildfire smoke—may affect some outdoor events. If you're planning to attend any of the activities below, it's always a good idea to check the organizer's official website or social media for the latest updates before heading out.

By the middle of July, New York has fully embraced the rhythm of summer.

The days feel longer, the evenings stretch well past sunset, and the city's parks, piers, and public spaces become places where people linger rather than simply pass through. A yoga class turns into dinner by the waterfront. An outdoor movie becomes the perfect excuse to stay outside a little longer. Even an ordinary walk home can end with live music or a view of the skyline at golden hour.

This week captures that feeling perfectly.

From outdoor cinema and waterfront stargazing to poetry festivals, food markets, dance classes, and one of the city's newest immersive exhibitions, there are countless ways to experience summer across New York.

If you're looking for things to do in NYC this week, here are some of the highlights.

Early Week in NYC (July 15–16)

The week begins with a mix of creativity, movement, and warm summer evenings.

On July 15, the Seaport welcomes Balloon Museum: Daydream, a new immersive exhibition where large-scale inflatable installations transform air into interactive works of art.

Later that evening, Elizabeth Street Garden hosts a screening of The Princess Bride, while Brooklyn Bridge Park invites visitors to look beyond the skyline during another free Stargazing session with the Amateur Astronomers Association, offering telescope views of the moon, stars, and planets along the waterfront.

Bryant Park continues its packed summer programming with beginner knitting workshops during the afternoon, followed by its popular free evening yoga class. Across the Hudson, Riverside Park South hosts its Evening Salute to the Sun yoga session, while Everybody Tango! returns to West Harlem Piers for another evening of free Argentine tango lessons and open-air social dancing.

July 16 keeps the outdoor movie tradition alive.

Union Square Park presents Shrek as part of its Movies Under the Stars series, while Brooklyn Bridge Park continues its beloved Movies with a View program with a screening of Bend It Like Beckham, pairing cinema with one of the city's most spectacular skyline backdrops.

Parks, Culture & Summer Traditions (July 17–18)

As the week continues, New York's public spaces once again become cultural gathering places.

On July 17, Bryant Park's Reading Room hosts a free Nature Talks lecture exploring New York City's native bees, offering a fascinating look at the wildlife that quietly shares the city with millions of people.

That evening, The Battery hosts another outdoor movie screening with Little Fugitive, one of New York's most beloved independent films and a timeless portrait of a summer spent exploring the city.

Throughout the weekend, Smorgasburg returns with its rotating outdoor markets, bringing together some of New York's best local food vendors in Central Park, the World Trade Center, Williamsburg, and Prospect Park.

On July 18, Bryant Park welcomes dancers of all experience levels for Moves with Limón Dance, a free modern dance class led by artists from the internationally acclaimed Limón Dance Company.

Weekend in NYC (July 19)

Sunday brings together literature, wellness, culture, and community across the city.

Governors Island hosts the 15th Annual New York City Poetry Festival, where poets, publishers, and audiences gather for a full day of readings and performances in one of New York's most unique outdoor settings.

In Times Square, the Japan Festival returns with Japanese street food, cultural performances, music, crafts, and family-friendly activities celebrating Japanese culture in the heart of Manhattan.

Those looking for a slower start to the day can also join Girls Who Meet for a rooftop yoga session in Downtown Manhattan, combining movement with sweeping views over the city.

Through the Week

One thing becomes increasingly noticeable by mid-July.

Summer in New York isn't defined by a single event.

It's built around small routines that repeat every week in slightly different ways.

Outdoor movie nights become part of your calendar. Yoga classes return to the same lawns. Smorgasburg pops up in another neighborhood. Stargazing, concerts, poetry readings, and evening walks quietly become part of everyday life.

That's what makes this time of year feel so distinctive.

Whether you're looking for free things to do in NYC this week, outdoor movies, summer festivals, food markets, waterfront events, or wellness activities, this guide offers plenty of ways to experience New York during the heart of summer.

Because by the second half of July, summer in New York isn't something you're waiting for anymore.

It's simply the rhythm of a New York summer.
